Doing a Double Take on How We View the DisabledPosted by danb As an X-Game competitor, Kevin Michael Connolly is at the top of his game. In his book, Double Take, he's proved he's quite a capable story teller as well. Mr. Connolly was born with bilateral amelia, a birth defect that prevents his femurs from growing into his hip sockets. As a result he has no legs and has walked on his hands for most of his life and also traveled around the world on a skateboard. Although he may be missing his legs, Kevin has plenty of heart and is a natural competitor. As a boy he took up skiiing to remain fit and became good enough to win a silver medal at the 2006 Winter X-Games. In his book Double Take, he uses photography to gaze back at the people who stare at him while he traveled the world on a skateboard. Instead of growing frustrated or angry with the onlookers, he engages them in conversation and begins a dialog. Kevin Michael Connolly and his book are incredible inspirational. Check out his book whenever you get a chance. |
