There were a lot of fireworks going off in Portland last night. Between a classic duel between Minotauro and Couture and the vicious KO’s scored by Silva and Marquadt, UFC 102 has more than it’s share of great moments.
But one of UFC 102’s most memorable moments wasn’t even seen by most people viewing the event at home or in a bar. The event occurred during the undercard bout between undefeated heavyweight Todd Duffee and Tim Hague. Duffee, a former police officer and member of the BORN STRONGER fight team, sent Hague sprawling to the mat with a vicious jab just seven seconds into round one! Duffee’s KO set a new record for fastest KO ever in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. With the win, Duffee improved his undefeated record to 5-0 with all five of his wins coming via TKO or KO.
Quite a lot of buzz had been building up around Duffee before the fight had even occurred. As a freestyle fighter, Duffee fights out of the legendary American Top Team Academy in Coconut Creek, FL. American Top Team is legendary for churning out some of the most well-rounded fighters in all of Mixed Martial Arts. Before the Hague fight, Duffee had stopped Brazilian heavyweight Assuerio Silva at Jungle Fight 11 in Rio de Janiero. While not exactly Brock Lesnar, Silva is still one heck of a fighter. For Duffee to defeat him by TKO via punches just a minute into the second round of their fight is quite a feat.
So what’s next for the newest member of the BORN STRONGER fight team? Could Duffee be the guy to save the UFC from Brock Lesnar? It certainly seems possible. But first, Duffee has to take on a few more experienced opponents. At the post-fight party, Duffee allegedly expressed interest in fighting UFC veteran Heath Herring. However, Herring hasn’t fought since his loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 87 in August of 2008. That’s a heck of a layoff. It’s possible that Duffee could fight Cheick Kongo or maybe even Randy Couture. Even though he lost to Nogueira last night, Couture just signed a new deal that will keep him fighting in the UFC for six more fights.
Whoever fights Duffee next better bring his “A” game. During the post-fight interview Duffee was quoted as telling Dana White, “That was just an appetizer. Now let me feed!”
